Presidents' Message

from Ian Seamans and Janet Imhoff

Happy Juneteenth and happy Pride Month! LWV-CC celebrated the 'Teenth by registering voters and giving out information at the McKinney Juneteenth Celebration on the 15th. We encourage you to take action too, by urging your members of congress to support the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act by clicking here. Named for the civil rights activist, John Lewis, the JLVRAA would restore and modernize the Voting Rights Act, after it was gutted in the 2012 Supreme Court Decision Shelby County v. Holder.

This month also marks the 100th birthday of one of LWV-CC's founders, Meg Titus. She has been a member for more than 69 years! We are proud to have her as a member, and thank her for her service to the North Texas community. You can see an article about her 100th birthday celebration below and you can read her bio here. Congratulations on 100, Meg!

If you want to get more involved with the League, over the next several months we will have many opportunities for voter services, program, observer corps, and newsletter volunteers. If you are interested in registering voters, organizing information forums, observing local government, or putting together newsletters, please email LWVCollin@gmail.com.

Congratulations, Class of 2024!
 Get Ready to Vote!

It is time to celebrate the high-school graduates in your life - and make sure they are ready to vote by sending them a Vote411 postcard!

For many graduates, 2024 is the first year that they can make their voices heard at the ballot box. For others, it may be their first time participating in a presidential election.

Let them know their voices matter and that they can get the election information they need with Vote411 by sharing one of our English or Spanish-language postcards.

Thank you for empowering the voters in your community!

Meg Titus 100 Birthday
Celebrating Meg Titus's 100th Birthday

Happy 100th birthday Meg Titus, one of the founders of LWV Collin County! On Tuesday, June 4th, League members attended her party, where she served champagne and Sachertorte.

Meg joined the League of Women Voters 69 years ago in Waterloo, Iowa. As a passionate advocate for environmental issues, she lobbied the state legislature to stop the pollution of the Cedar River. After moving to Texas in 1971, she joined the LWV Dallas Board of Directors. During her time with the Dallas League, she served as the Environmental Chair and the LWV Texas Air and Water Advocacy Chair.

After moving to Plano, she put an ad in the Plano Star Courier about starting a local League and more than 50 people responded. LWV Plano was officially formed in 1976 and the name was changed to LWV Collin County in 2013. Meg was President of LWV-CC from 1980-1984 and she remains active in the League to this day. She said, "I have really enjoyed my many years in the League at all levels and want to thank the group and our League for the opportunity to be active in such important political and environmental activities for so many years."

The LWVCC Board of Directors congratulates Meg on her 100th and thanks her for her tireless volunteerism across North Texas. Her contributions to civic engagement and advocacy for the public good are truly remarkable and we are lucky to have her as a member.

Upcoming Program on Misinformation

The League of Women Voters of Collin County is pleased to present a public forum on September 30, 2024, 6:30PM at Haggard Library in Plano on media literacy and how to identify misinformation and disinformation. Our presenter, Dr. Lauren Ratliff Santoro, is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas and teaches a course on "fake news". All are welcome to join!

During September we are expecting an influx of misinformation and disinformation in the media related to the upcoming elections. This is a great opportunity to educate yourself on how to identify false and misleading information.

This event is not sponsored by the Plano Public Library System or the City of Plano.

Program Vice President Needed

We are filling leadership roles on the 2024-25 Board of Directors and we still have one position open - the Program Vice President. This is an important position that has been capably handled for the past two years by Sharon Hirsch.

The Program Vice President chairs a committee that plans public forums in which speakers address issues that are important to the League and the community at large. We usually have two or three public forums a year on topics that are decided by the membership through our program planning process. League program is vital to keeping our members informed and educated.

The Program Vice President gets to engage the people that are working on Collin County's most important issues. Prior experience is not required and the work of putting on programs is distributed among the Program committee. We are more than happy to assist and teach anyone interested in leading Program.

If League program interests you, please email Janet Imhoff at LWVCollin@gmail.com.
