The June League News
June 2022

Janet Headshot
A Message from Incoming President Janet Imhoff

Welcome to the start of a new League year!  Our new year officially begins June 1 with-

  • a new board of directors,
  • new plans for interesting programs and activities,
  • new plans for getting non-partisan information to voters for the upcoming elections in November and May.

I am the new President, and our board will meet later this month to work on these plans.  We hope to build in some social activities so we can get to know each other as we work on our mission of Empowering Voters & Defending Democracy!

Non-partisanship: We are a political organization, but we take our non-partisanship very seriously.

  • We never support or oppose candidates or political parties as a League,
  • but we do encourage you to do so as individuals.

There are two sides to League!  Voter Service and Program—

  • Our Voter Service is strictly non-partisan, encouraging voting and citizen participation in government.  We provide Voters Guides and Candidate forums to help voters make informed decisions.  Our non-partisanship gives us credibility with candidates and the public.
  • Our Program consists of positions on issues which were reached through study and discussion of our members over many years. Our Program positions are truly grassroots, never derived from the top-down.  League advocates for our positions at the state, national and local levels.
    • Here are links to our LWVUS and LWVTX program positions.

Regarding the recent tragedy in Uvalde:  The League position on Gun Policy is a LWVUS position and was formed by members across the country in 1990.  We use it to advocate at our state Legislature.  In the past Legislative session, we submitted testimony on 20 separate gun bills, both for and against.  You can find our Gun Policy position under the LWVUS link above.

My heart is broken by this senseless tragedy, and my hope is that we can find a way to stop such terrible shootings from happening again.  Please communicate with your state and federal elected officials, as individuals, about your feelings and ideas.

Welcome to our 2022-23 League year.  We will make it fun and interesting!

Message from LWV-TX President
As the new president of the League of Women Voters, I've hit the ground running  in response the shooting in Uvalde. If you are like me, you are still upset, angry, and heartbroken by the senseless murder of 19 children and 2 teachers at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde on May 24.  Thinking of all the mass shootings and gun violence prior to and since then, you know we must demand something be done. Gun safety, or should we say the lack thereof, is a national health crisis that Congress and the Texas Legislature must address now.

After the Robb Elementary tragedy, the League put out a press release calling for two actions:
Use the LWVUS Take Action page to contact your Congressional representative to tell them Congress Must Act to Protect the Nation from the Plague of Gun Violence!
Join the League of Women Voters Gun Safety Action Team. Contact Aimee Mobley Turney at aimeeturney@lwvhouston.org to learn how you can take action in the upcoming legislative session.
I’m asking you to take one more action on this critical issue. Make your voice heard in your community by writing a "Letter to the Editor" using our LWVTX Take Action tool. Remember the letter needs to be from you as an individual as only League presidents may send letters on behalf of the League.

Keep a watch for further League action on this soon. We are in the planning stages for a statewide, maybe national, forum along with other nonpartisan organizations.

Please join me in congratulating and welcoming our 2022-2024 LWVTX Board of Directors (see below) as well as our newest League, LWV Southwest Texas.

I am humbled and honored to serve as the president of the League of Women Voters of Texas. I look forward to standing with you to take action to empower voters and defend democracy.

Sincerely,

Joyce LeBombard
President, League of Women Voters of Texas
