July 2022

Presidents Message Janet
Message from the President

I hope you all had a wonderful, fun-filled Fourth of July!

Supreme Court Decisions
The US Supreme Court has sent down rulings this summer in three areas that are very disappointing to the League:  women’s access to abortion, laws on gun control, and regulations addressing climate change.  The League has positions on these issues at both the state and national levels, and works hard to advocate for our positions in Congress and the Texas legislature.
  • Women’s Health: We will continue to fight for women’s right to choose the best option for herself, understanding that this decision will greatly impact the poor and women of color.  Statements were sent to all League members from LWVUS and LWV Texas, and I am attaching them here. LWVUS Statement on Roe v Wade - LWV Texas Response
  • Gun Safety: LWV Texas June Action News outlined three actions we can take to respond the Uvalde elementary school shooting, including writing your own letter to the editor using our action tool, or contacting our state Gun Safety Gun Safety Issue Chair to take action. Here is the link: How to take action for Gun safety
Webinar: Assault Rifles-What Can Be Done? See below for information on a webinar sponsored by LWV Texas, LULAC, and NAACP.  It will be on July 13, 7-8:30.  You can also find information in the LWV Texas Action News, July 5 issue.
  • Climate Change: In a ruling tailored to the Environmental Protection Agency, the court ruled that the EPA does not have broad authority to reduce power plant emissions that contribute to global warming. Here is a link to the LWVUS Climate Action page. Climate Action
As a member of the League, you are in a position to make a difference on these and many other issues. The board of the Collin County League is planning some interesting meetings for us this year, so we will be informed and active. Please let me know what you would like us to address this year. Thank you for your membership, and I will see you soon.

LWVUS Convention
This month convention delegates added several items to our Program Positions and adopted some important resolutions.
Program Adoptions-
  • Direct Election of the President – delegates voted to add this item to our Making Democracy Work agenda.  This will prioritize action to either adopt the National Vote Interstate Compact or work to abolish the Electoral College by Constitutional amendment.
  • Passed positions by concurrence that will update our Health Care and Criminal Justice positions and added a position on Digital Equity by concurrence. Watch for more information on these issues.
  • Added the ERA (Equal Right Amendment) to our program, so we can accomplish its passage and further our mission.
Resolutions Passed -
  • Resolved to actively advocate and support Immigration Reform.
  • Resolved to urge state and local government to adopt Declarations of Climate Emergency appropriate to local conditions.
  • Resolved to advocate to address Missing and Murdered Indigenous People through comprehensive data collection and inter-agency cooperation.

HB133 Postpartum Coverage Amendment - Federal Public Comment Opportunity
In the wake of last week’s decision in Dobbs v Mississippi, every opportunity to expand and protect healthcare for underserved communities in Texas is important. Texans for Children, an affiliate of the League of Women Voters, is asking Leagues and League members to offer public comment on HB 133, a bill from last session which extends Texas Medicaid postpartum coverage for moms from 60 days to 6 months after childbirth or involuntary miscarriage. Read more here

Texas' waiver amendment request is open for public comment at the federal level until July 10, 2022. This is our chance to show the need for 12 months postpartum coverage, and we want to make sure the federal government understands there are numerous Texas stakeholders that think it's still possible.
