Spring is just around the corner and our League is making plans for meetings and activities.  Our January program will be a lunchtime Zoom meeting on January 18.  You received a notice and sign-up link last week for “Tips on Writing Letters to the Editor.” You can sign up here. I hope you can attend.

Other activites include Voter Registration events at the five Collin College Campuses and for new citizens.  We will register at Collin College Rock the Vote on January 24 and 25th.  Please sign in on our website to sign up for one of those registration events.

Don’t forget to get or renew your VDR certificate to be a Volunteer Deputy Registrar for the next two years.  Call the Collin County Elections Office at 972-547-1990 to set up an appointment.

The Texas Legislature has just started its biennial 88th session, and we will be following bills and lobbying in favor of League positions on issues.  Go to the LWV Texas website to see what those positions are, and stay tuned for Action Alerts from LWV Texas when we can help by sending emails automatically to our Representatives and Senators, and also writing letters to our newspapers.

Lobby Days in Austin will be February 27-28.  Each League in Texas sends a delegation to Austin to earn about our Priority Issues and to visit our legislators about them.  We would love to have you join us.  Please contact me by February 1 if you are interested in going with our delegation.

Consider joining the Collin County League Book Club.  We meet every other month on the 2nd Wednesday evening by Zoom.  The discussions are always interesting and fun.  Our next book will be “Where Do We Go From Here?” by Martin Luther King Jr.  First published in 1966, it is still meaningful and relevant today.  Got to our website to register for the March 8 meeting.

Hope to see you soon,
Janet

Join us on Wednesday, January 18th from 12 - 1p.m. on Zoom for an informative lunch & learn! Deborah Fleck, Letters Editor for the Dallas Morning News, will discuss how letters to the editor are chosen for publication and what you can do to be an effective letter writer.

This event is open to both members and non-members and will be recorded for later viewing on the LWV-CC YouTube channel.

Register for the event HERE!

Volunteer Opportunities
Rock the Vote at Collin College
LWV-CC Volunteer Deputy Registrars will register Collin College students January 24 (McKinney and Wylie campuses) and January 25 (Plano, Frisco and Allen campuses) from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Click HERE to log on as an LWV-CC member and sign up for Rock the Vote.

VDR Renewal
Remember that all VDR certifications expired at the end of December and you must renew your certification for 2023-2024 if you haven’t already done so. To do this, make an appointment with the Collin County Elections office. If you were a VDR in 2021-2022, you just need to fill out some paperwork. Otherwise, you will need to undergo training for new VDRs. Check HERE to see information about how to become a VDR.

Naturalization Ceremonies
We are also continuing to register hundreds of new citizens at large naturalization ceremonies in Plano once or twice a month. If you are interested in finding out about these opportunities, please contact janice.schieffer.lwv@gmail.com.

Leadership Positions Available
Plans are shaping up now for leadership positions in the upcoming LWV-CC year. If you might be interested in serving on the Board of Directors or sharing your skills to help lead in some other capacity, please contact Janet at janetimhofflwv@gmail.com.

LWV-CC Book Club - March 8

All are invited to the League of Women Voters of Collin County Book Club! On March 8 6:30-7:30pm, we will meet on Zoom to discuss Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community by Martin Luther King Jr. We will share our thoughts on the book as well as various discussion questions.

You can purchase a digital, physical, or audio copy of the book here. You can check your local library availability here.

Register for the Book Club meeting HERE. If you are a member, make sure you are logged in to your LWV-CC account before registering.

Lunch With The League

All are welcome at a buy-your-own social lunch with LWV-CC on Tuesday, February 21, 11:30-1:00, at Ellen's, 210 S Central Expy, Allen 75013. Please register by February 19 so that we know how many seats to reserve. Click HERE to register.
