Every March members submit Program ideas for next year. These are suggestions for topics they want to study or take action on next year.

Program ideas must be suggested by members in March to be considered at the Annual Meeting in May. Here are ways in which you may suggest local program ideas for next year.

  •  March 2, 6:00-6:30 – Local Program Planning meeting
All members are welcome to attend the meeting and may also stay for the Board meeting immediately following it. Please log in to the website and REGISTER for the event. The Zoom link will be sent to you after registration.
  • March 8, 6:30 – Book Club meeting
We will take a few minutes at the start of the Book Club meeting to hear suggestions for local program planning. You are also welcome to stay for the Book Club discussion about "Where Do We Go From Here," by Martin Luther King Jr. Please log in to the website and REGISTER for the event. The Zoom link will be sent to you after registration.
  • Respond to this SURVEY by March 10.

What program planning suggestions are considered?

New Study
This would require forming a committee to do the study groundwork and then holding a meeting to hear the presentation, discuss it, and consider adopting a position by consensus. If you propose a new study, you may be expected to be the Chair, and additional committee members would be identified.
Amend or Update a Current Position
Find the current positions HERE. To Amend, the exact wording of an amendment is required. An Update can be done by a committee or by having a meeting on the topic with speakers.
Hold an Informational Forum
The forum might relate to an LWVTX or LWVUS position (gun safety, immigration, etc.) or it might be a new topic that is a hot issue in Collin County.

As the state Legislature begins its biennial 5-month session, the League’s attention turns from our non-partisan Voters Service activities to our adopted program positions and advocacy. Of course we will do Voters Guides and Candidates Forums for the May 6 Local Elections, but we will watch the Legislature and the bills that are filed so we can advocate for or against bills.

Nonpartisanship and the League: This is an important concept, and many people outside the League don’t understand this as it relates to our activities.

  •  Voters Services:  We are non-partisan! We never support or oppose any candidate or political party.  In our Voters Guides and Candidates Forums, we work hard to make sure our questions cannot be construed as partisan or misleading.  We work in the interest of all the public, and our positions on various issues are never considered.
  • Advocacy and our Positions on Issues:  Historically the League decided that we must educate ourselves on issues in order to vote intelligently.  From the beginning of the League in 1920, our positions are reached by consensus of the members – never handed down from the leadership.

Therefore we advocate on proposed legislation in accordance with our positions on issues.  If we haven’t studied and reached a consensus position on an issue, we cannot advocate.

We are one of the few multi-issue organizations!  Over the 100 years of League (our 103rd birthday is February 14!), we have accrued positions on many issues.  We review our positions periodically and vote to keep, drop, or amend them at our conventions.  We are truly a grass-roots organization.

You can review our national positions here.

Candidate filing is complete for the May 6 city and school elections in Collin County! What are the issues you are concerned about? Let us know so we can ask the candidates in our virtual candidate forums in March. We will host forums for candidates in contested races for Plano City Council and ISD trustees, McKinney City Council and ISD trustees, and Collin College trustees. Send your questions to LWVCollin.forum@gmail.com. Thanks for your input!

LWV-CC Book Club - March 8

All are invited to the League of Women Voters of Collin County Book Club! On March 8 6:30-7:30pm, we will meet on Zoom to discuss Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community by Martin Luther King Jr. We will share our thoughts on the book as well as various discussion questions.

You can purchase a digital, physical, or audio copy of the book here. You can check your local library availability here.
