Presidents' Message

from Ian Seamans and Janet Imhoff

We hope you are enjoying your summer. LWV-CC has been busy preparing for the upcoming election, including voter registration and voter education. We hope you join us on September 30 at a free public forum on misinformation called, “Fake or Fact? A Public Forum on False Information.” See the article later in this issue, plan to come and bring your friends. Please sign up here so we know how many to expect.

Please consider volunteering for a voter registration event or our misinformation forum. You can find more information in the newsletter below. We are a non-partisan political organization but our members are free to work in any partisan political activity. Just remember that you cannot speak for the League at any outside event or activity, and we cannot discuss candidates or bring their materials to any League events.

Our Lunches With the League will continue in the summer, in Plano on the second Tuesday and in McKinney on the fourth Friday. Sign up on the website for place and time. They are open to interested non-members too.

We will honor our founding member, Meg Titus, on her 100th Birthday! Please come and wish her well on August 14th at 2 PM. You can sign up on the website, here.

Thank you for your membership!

Volunteer Opportunities

  1. On Saturday, August 3, from 10AM to 1PM, the McKinney Library will be holding its annual “Finale Fest”, a carnival themed event for the end of summer. It will be held at the John & Judy Gay Public Library at 6861 Eldorado Pkwy in McKinney. This is near Alma Drive. We are looking for two people to work each of the two shifts (10-11:30; and 11:30-1). You do not need to be a VDR for this event. Please feel free to sign up for both shifts. This will be an outdoor event. Our booth will have a canopy, iced water, and a small fan. Click here to volunteer!
  2. On Tuesday, August 6, from 12:30-2:30PM, we will be helping to register individuals living at Hidden Springs of McKinney. This is an independent living facility, located at 6421 McKinney Ranch Pwky in McKinney. We need two VDR volunteers. Click here to volunteer!

Virtual Volunteer Deputy Registrar (VDR) Training

For those who are not a Collin County Volunteer Deputy Registrar (VDR), there is an opportunity to obtain the certification without driving to McKinney during the work day. On August 8 and September 5, 2024, Collin County Elections will hold a “Virtual VDR Training Lab” between 6PM and 9PM. Register for one of the trainings by clicking here.
After attending the training, a certificate of appointment and an application for appointment will be mailed to you. You complete the forms, and mail them back to become certified.

in memoriam
In Memoriam

League Member Dorothy Baume passed away this month. She joined the LWV-CC in 2015 and was especially active around League Lunches. She will be missed.

Upcoming Program on Misinformation

We are pleased to present a public forum on September 30, 2024, 6:30PM at Haggard Library in Plano on media literacy and how to identify misinformation and disinformation. Our presenter, Dr. Lauren Ratliff Santoro, is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas and teaches a course on "fake news". All are welcome to join!

We expect an influx of misinformation and disinformation related to the upcoming election will occur over the next several months. This is a great opportunity to educate yourself on how to identify false and misleading information.

We are looking for volunteers for set-up, clean-up, check-in, and snacks for the night of the event. Click here to volunteer!

This event is not sponsored by the Plano Public Library System or the City of Plano.
