September Member Update

Presidents' Message
from Ian Seamans and Janet Imhoff

As September wraps up, we are quickly closing in on early voting and Election Day! Before the voter registration deadline for the November election rolls around on October, 7, our League will be busy with several dedicated voter registration events and the Sept. 30 Fake or Fact public forum on misinformation. If you want to get involved at this critical time, please login on the website, then check our volunteer opportunities page, or see the article at the bottom of this newsletter for additional volunteering positions.

North Texas Giving Day was this month and LWV-CC supporters showed up! We received $1,235, beating our goal by 23%! THANK YOU to everyone who donated to support our mission of Empowering Voters, Defending Democracy.

Upcoming Program on Misinformation

The League of Women Voters of Collin County is pleased to present a public forum on September 30, 2024, 6:30PM at Haggard Library in Plano on media literacy and how to identify misinformation and disinformation. Our presenter, Dr. Lauren Ratliff Santoro, is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Texas at Dallas and teaches a course on "fake news". All are welcome to join!

We expect an influx of misinformation and disinformation related to the upcoming elections will occur over the next several months. This is a great opportunity to educate yourself on how to identify false and misleading information.

This event is not sponsored by the Plano Public Library System or the City of Plano.

Save the Date for Our 50th Anniversary Fundraiser

Join the Collin County League of Women Voters next year to celebrate our 50th anniversary! We will recognize women and organizations focused on the League's mission of Empowering Voters and Defending Democracy.

Join us for trivia, wine, music, food, and a silent auction. The event will be on March 30, 2025, from 4 - 8 PM at the Barnhill Hill Vineyards in Anna, TX, so save the date!

We are currently looking for three volunteers to work on LWV trivia. Work with a small group developing the trivia questions & answers (and wrong answers) for the trivia contest! To volunteer, email LWVCollin@gmail.com

If you are interested in donating silent auction items, please contact Diane Southworth - LWVCollin@gmail.com

Nonpartisanship policy
Reminder of Nonpartisanship

This is a friendly reminder, especially during these very partisan times, that all League members must remain nonpartisan while engaging in League work or at League meetings. Our nonpartisanship policy extends to all of our social League events, so please refrain from partisan speech or endorsing candidates while at those meetings.

While we encourage League members to be politically active on their own time, we must adhere to our bylaws and policies to remain nonpartisan while conducting League business or at League events. If you would like to read our nonpartisanship policies, you can do so, here.

Volunteers needed
Volunteers Needed!

LWV-CC has a volunteer role that needs to be filled!
  • Newsletter Editor - The Newsletter Editor sends out a monthly reminder to board members and committee chairs requesting newsletter articles, and copies those articles into our newsletter maker. No experience is needed and training will be provided.
If you are interested in volunteering, please email Ian Seamans at LWVCollin@gmail.com
