Voter Education at Collin College & VDR Reminder

LWV-CC has been invited to talk to Collin College students and help them register to vote at four campuses in February: Wylie, February 10; Plano, February 11; Frisco, February 12, and McKinney, February 13. To volunteer, please login to www.lwvcollin.org and find the signup under the Members Only tab.

If you are a Volunteer Deputy Registrar, remember that your certification expires at the end of 2024. In January, you can be recertified for 2025-2026. Collin County VDRs will need to take the VDR test and complete paperwork either in person at the Elections Office or at a virtual session. Current VDRs must also return their expired certifications and any voter registration forms, and can do so when they recertify for the next two years.

Visit the Collin County Elections Office website for more information for returning and new VDRs.

Questions for 2025 Local Elections

The May 3, 2025, local elections will include races for mayor, city council, ISD trustees, and Collin College trustees. In January, an LWV-CC team will finalize questions for the Voters Guides for those races. Questions will also be prepared for candidate forums.

If you would like to submit question suggestions for any of these races, send them to LWVCollin.forum@gmail.com. If you’d like to join the team to prepare Voters Guide and candidate forum questions, contact Janice Schieffer at voterservice@lwvcollin.org.

New Join/Renew System Beginning February 1

Beginning on February 1, the LWV join/renew system will change to be consistent across all local, state, and national Leagues. This will be good for LWV-CC, since local leagues are expected to receive a higher percentage of the dues.

When you click on the join/renew link at your usual join/renew time frame, you will be directed to an LWVUS form. Instead of the old fixed dues amount, you will get to choose how much you want to contribute as your dues. The recommended amount will be $75, however you are welcome to pay more or less, with a minimum of $20. After selecting a dues amount, you will have the option to donate to the local league. Find out more by reading this Membership FAQ. Questions? Contact Sharon at membership@lwvcollin.org.

Shaping the League's Position on the Federal Judiciary

The League of Women Voters develops its advocacy and education priorities based on  Positions established through rigorous study and consensus at the local, state, and national levels. These positions guide our efforts to address critical issues and promote informed action.

At the 2024 LWVUS Convention, delegates voted to initiate a national study to develop a position on the Federal Judiciary—an essential pillar of U.S. democracy. Currently, the League does not have a formal position on this topic. This study aims to explore key issues, including judicial accountability, transparency, independence, and ethics, with a focus on the Supreme Court and other Article III federal courts.

As part of this process, our local League will hold a member meeting in the spring, tentatively scheduled for mid-March, to discuss and reach consensus on questions provided by LWVUS. The insights and consensus from this meeting will be submitted to the national League and will contribute to the development of the position, set to be announced at the 2025 LWVUS Council in June.

Stay tuned for announcements about the date and location of the local consensus meeting.
