Special January Member Update

Update to LWV Membership Join/Renew

LWVUS will soon have a consistent Join/Renew process for the entire organization. In early February, you should receive an email from LWVUS inviting you to activate your account by signing in to the new system and updating your profile. Signing in will be easy & will not require a new password. We encourage you to do this so that you are ready prior to your annual renewal timeframe.

At your next renewal, you will get to choose your dues. The recommended amount is $75, however you are welcome to pay more or less, with a minimum of $20. You may also sign up another person, such as a household member, for the same dues amount. The next screen will offer the option to donate to the local league. Payment may be done online using a credit card or ACH bank transfer. Your credit card statement will show 3 charges, since the dues will be split across the national, state, & local levels.

Remembering Mike Imhoff

Dr. Michael Imhoff, known to his friends as Mike, passed away on December 29, 2024, in Denver, Colorado, where he was spending the holidays with his family. Mike was a long time member of the League of Women Voters and was especially interested in addressing climate change, which inspired him to serve as the Climate Chair for LWVTX during the 2021 state legislative session.

Mike is survived by his beloved wife, Janet Imhoff, and children, Joshua Imhoff of Coppell, Texas and Elizabeth Mabey and her husband Paul of Denver, Colorado, as well as his brother Bill Imhoff and partner Hilde Heidt of Mendocino, California. Imhoff also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren: Alex, Cole, Ethan, Daniel and Bryce Imhoff of Texas, and Caroline and Nicholas Mabey of Colorado, who brought immense joy to his life.

A memorial service will be held on campus at Wynne Chapel on February 1, 2025, at 2 p.m., followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in memory of Dr. Michael Imhoff be made to Austin College. Click here to be taken to the Austin College donation page.

Contribute Your Program Planning Ideas!

Every February, LWV-CC members may participate in a local program planning meeting to propose topics for study or action in the next LWV-CC year. This year's meeting is February 6 from 6:00-6:30pm. Click here to register. Members must log in first.

In the League, program is the education and advocacy platform adopted by members to empower voters and defend democracy.

One or more of the following options can be proposed for the 2025/2026 program:
  • Host an informational public forum regarding a subject in the coming year
  • Create an action plan related to a local, state, or national position
  • Initiate the study of a topic by a committee in order to build consensus around a new position that could be adopted in a future year
  • Charge a committee with reviewing and updating a local position to be voted on at the next year's annual meeting
  • Amend a position with a minor change to wording
  • Adopt another local League's position by concurrence
The board votes on program recommendations made at the meeting, then the LWV-CC membership votes on the program at the Annual Meeting in May. Non-recommended program items can be proposed by members at the Annual Meeting, but must be seconded to be voted upon.

Register for the Federal Judiciary Consensus Meeting

On March 18 at 6:30PM LWV-CC members will meet at the Haggard Library to consider questions for a Federal Judiciary Study. Register here to attend the meeting.

At the meeting, a moderator will present the questions for discussion and LWV-CC will pass on the meeting’s consensus for LWVUS’s consideration.

The study was prompted by league members’ interest as expressed at the national convention. Questions about Supreme Court ethics policies prompted the study and LWV members voted at the convention to expand the study beyond the Supreme Court to examine lower federal courts, as well. The goal is to develop a comprehensive policy on the judiciary, as LWVUS currently has no such policy. More information from LWVUS is available here.

LWVUS is also holding a National Town Hall on the Federal Judiciary Study on February 4 at 6:00PM CST. You can hear from leading experts on this work, pose questions, and get information about the federal judiciary. The town hall will be hosted on Microsoft Teams and there is a guide available at the LWVUS link on how to use that platform, if you haven't before. Click here to view the meeting link and more.

Timeline:
  • February 4 at 6:00PM – National Town Hall on the Federal Judiciary
  • February-April – Local chapter meetings (either virtual or in person) to discuss the issue and answer questions provided by the national league, with the goal of coming to a consensus
  • April 14 – Consensus Submission Deadline
  • April-May – U.S. Board vote
  • June 26-28 – Announcement of position
