President's Message

Early Voting is finished, and Election Day is Tuesday, November 4th! If you haven’t voted yet and would like to learn more, check out the LWV-TX explainer videos. These short videos break down each constitutional amendment and outline the pros and cons — a great way to get informed before you head to the polls on Tuesday! Remember to check your personalized sample ballot at www.vote411.org and print your choices to take to the polls.

We’re already preparing for the March Primaries! Planning for our candidate forums begins in November, and it truly takes a village — or in this case, a dedicated committee — to make it all happen. Primaries include many races and candidates, so there’s plenty to do. If you have a few hours to help — emailing candidates, serving as a timer during a forum, facilitating forums via Zoom, or reviewing candidate questions, we’d love your involvement. Please email voterservices@lwvcollin.org, and we’ll invite you to the first planning meeting on November 18th! Candidate forums are one of the most important ways we educate voters, and volunteering for them is a wonderful way to support our mission to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy.

Finally, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank-you to all the poll workers who are working diligently to ensure we have free and fair elections. It’s not an easy job to work with the public for long days, and we truly appreciate your dedication and commitment!

   | | No Kings 2 October 18

The Frisco, McKinney and Plano No Kings 2 events were well attended by joyous, Democracy loving Americans — Americans from all walks of life, all shapes, sizes, and colors, young, old, and in between.

There were people in costumes — bananas, unicorns, and Uncle Sam, to name a few. Many were wearing yellow (the color represents anti-fascism). There were people passing out yellow ribbons and water bottles. The crowd was peaceful but raucous. People joyously waving American flags, very creative signs, and chanting slogans, with cars driving by honking in approval. Americans enjoying their right to protest government overreach. Even a short but heavy downpour didn’t dampen the crowd.

Thanks to all who attended.

The Brennan Center for Justice held a Zoom event in early October about "Democracy's Day in Court." The Court has steadily chipped away at protections designed to make American democracy fairer, more inclusive, and more representative. It has gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act, shut the courthouse doors to challenges to partisan gerrymandering, opened the floodgates to big money in politics, and allowed the president to dismantle checks and balances.

In the 2025-26 term, the justices will hear a set of cases that could accelerate that troublesome trend and produce landmark decisions. One case implicates how the Voting Rights Act ensures fair representation in state legislatures. Yet another takes up the controversy over the president's asserted power to unilaterally impose tariffs. You can view the recording here.

The Brennan Center for Justice is a nonpartisan law and policy institute that strives to uphold the values of democracy, and stands for equal justice and the rule of law. You can sign up for their newsletter here to be notified of future events of interest to you.
