Floodplain Management

The LWV of Collin County supports a strict interpretation of the flood plain ordinance, limiting the issuance of special use permits and variances, and providing adequate methods to find violations and correct them.

We advocate:

• Environmentally sound management of flood plain areas in Collin County and its various cities.
• The formation of an Environmental Commission to review requests for building permanent structures in a flood plain, and to provide the Planning and Zoning Commission and City Council with information outlining the projected effects of such structures.
• Local governments should be concerned with the quality of the creeks within their city limits, the effects they have on the communities, and whether anything in the flood plain area will alter the ecosystem or have any residual effects on downstream creeks, lakes, and waterways.
