LWV-CC Observers
Observers are the eyes and ears of the League
Understanding how the local government works is basic to effective League activity in our community. A local League observer is the eyes and ears of the League, learning about issues that are or may become items for local study or action. Consistent League presence at governmental meetings can add to the League’s visibility and credibility. However, a League observer is there only to observe and report back to the League, not to participate.
Objectives and Responsibilities
To monitor governmental bodies for information of importance to the League and the community/state by:
1. Attending assigned meetings, either in person or by video.
2. Reporting back about the “flavor” of the proceedings and any information regarding opportunities for League action or study, both in the actions of the elected officials and the community remarks.
Hopefully, most local officials will be delighted that someone is paying attention.
Who can be an observer?
All members are welcome. This is a great opportunity for members new to the League, new to the Collin County area, or just looking for an interesting activity. It is important to keep in mind that observers must not provide commentary or testimony on issues on behalf of the League or as an individual during these meetings. Members who attend must wear an LWV badge.
What do observers monitor at government meetings?
Observers monitor both the issues being discussed, as well as the process by which they are being discussed. While not every item up for discussion will relate to the League’s positions, ensuring that meetings are conducted in an open manner is critical to the League’s priorities and vital to the health of our democracy. Observers should consider the League principles and positions when determining which community issues might be of interest to our local League. Currently, we are interested in topics such as voting, elections, school policies, health care, homelessness, and transportation.
How do I sign up to be an observer?
